Nurses During the Civil War women were recruited as nurses. there were about 2,000 nurses in the war. the women volunteered to help the men that were wounded and sick.

Food that was made at the hospitals the food that was made in the hospitals was called pananda. the ingredients are as follows: dried bread, melted butter, sugar, brandy and boiling water.

Treating the wounded What the nurses and doctors used to treat the wounded were: bandages, spirits of camphor, turpentine and talcum powder.

Diseases There were many diseases that killed during the Civil War. One of these diseases was diarrhea/ dysntary combonation struck 1.7 million people, and killed 10,063. Typhoid another killer struck 149,000 federals, and killed 34,833. The measles struck 76,000 federals, and killed 5,177. Tuberculosis struck only 29,500 but more than made up for that by killing 6,946.

Conditions of the Surgical Tools The tools were repeatedly used. Always covered with blood and tissue. Many men died from the different diseases that were spread due to reusing the tools without cleaning them.

Hospitals During the Civil War hospitals were'nt in the best of places. They were often temporary, in barns, in the open, and at the end of the war tenant building were turned into hospitals.

Surgeons Surgeons of the Civil War were responsible for treating the wounded and or sick. Surgeons didn't understand infections or germs in that time, so many diseases were spread from man to man from non steral utensils when performing opereations.

Medicines in the Civil War There were few medicines for the men to take during that time. Opium pills were in high abundance in the south and men often got addicted to the pills. The ''blue pill'' was made out of tartar and other ingrdients.
